Of Gigantic Guardians

...Or, to be more precise: About Gigantic.
The game Gigantic, which is in alpha right now.
I got a chance to play it!

Gigantic mixes the personality-focused similarities of DotA-style games with TF2-gameplay. That's pretty much it - you pick a specific dude or chick from a list of dudes and chicks, and play this one dude or chick throughout the whole match, leveling up and enhancing your abilities. There are no Items and there is no farming/lasthitting/denying. Just objectives and killing the enemy team so they can't take objectives.

Games are won by dropping the HP of the enemy teams "Guardian" to zero. Guardians can only be attacked when your Guardian has slapped them, and the energy they need for slapping is slowly recharged by taking over the objectives on the map.

Onwards, to the important stuff! Is it fun to play? Are the characters badass hooded males, amazingly overused stereotypes or powerful females with perfectly toned bodies that also feel compelled to show as much of their respective bodies as possible?

Yes, no, no, no.

Alright, details. I was pleasantly surprised by the diverse Championpool. You can play a granny! And a fencing owl! And not one of the female characters is blatantly sexualized! Neither are the males! Yay! Exclamation mark! No, seriously, I can't emphasize enough how important this is for me. Just slapping some barely clothed females in there to get attention from males of all ages feels degrading to me - if you have to appeal to our basic instincts of reproduction to get people to play your game, you are doing it wrong.

Went off on a rant there, sorry.
So, is it fun? Yes. Why? Because the gameplay feels smooth. Keep in mind: closed alpha. There are missing abilities(just not in the game yet), randomly vanishing textures and all sorts of nonsense - but the gameplay, the hitting people in the face, feels good. What did NOT feel good to me, at least in the beginning, was the artstyle: both the amazingly bright colours and the very quirky characters didn't feel right for me for the first 2-3 matches. I did get used to it eventually.

In short: Game is good so far. I have high hopes for this one! If they continue like this, there's no reason why it shouldn't replace League in my daily routine.

Fare thee well, traveller!
